Dr. Norman H. Ertel has been a Professor of Medicine at the University of Medicine and Dentistry-New Jersey Medical School (UMDNJ-NJMS) since 1971 when he was appointed as the founding Chief of the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism.He also served as Chief of Medicine at the VA-New Jersey Healthcare System from 1971 until 2003. He is currently Professor of Medicine, Emeritus at UMDNJ-NJMS.

He is an honors graduate of Harvard College and the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. He did his Internal Medicine Residency at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, basic research in Steroid Biochemistry at the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, and his Endocrine Fellowship at the Cornell-New York Hospital Medical Center where he developed the assay of urinary free cortisol in the diagnosis of Cushing’s Syndrome. Dr. Ertel was an Air Force Captain and served as Chief of Endocrinology at the Malcolm S. Grow Medical Center-Andrews Air Force Base where he was the recipient of the Surgeon-General’s Research Award for describing the autoimmune etiology of Addison’s Disease. He is a founder and past President of both the Endocrine Society of New Jersey and the American Diabetes Association-New Jersey Affiliate. He currently serves on the Board of Trustees of the New Jersey Chapter of AACE and the Diabetes Foundation. He is the author of more than 200 published papers, book chapters and abstracts and has received numerous research grants from the NIH, the Veterans Administration,and other agencies. He is the co-Editor-in-Chief of a Textbook of Diabetes (2nd Edition-2008) and a Review Manual of Endocrinology (5th Edition-2008). He was recently named a Master of the American College of Physicians (MACP).

Dr. Paniagua is a graduate of the University of Illinois College of Medicine, completed his residency in internal medicine as well as a fellowship in geriatric medicine at the University of Washington. He is board-certified in internal, geriatric, and hospice & palliative medicine. Dr. Paniagua conducts medical education research as well as research, education and writing on geriatric syndromes, palliative medicine and long term care and has received multiple teaching awards from students and residents including the Gold Foundation’s Leonard Tow award for humanism in medicine and induction into Alpha Omega Alpha. Dr. Paniagua serves on the National Board of Medical Examiners and recently completed a four year term on a USMLE Step 3 Test Development Committee. He is a two time recipient of the Geriatric Academic Career Award (GACA) from HRSA and will soon complete his master’s degree in health professions education at the University of Illinois.
